Fine Art!

The weeks word was ‘traces’ looking both at what was around you and what had been (past and present) with my piece I decided to loon at both as though I was presenting a time line I would look at the growth of feet. These feet of different sizes would be placed up against a wall as a final piece in order to no only create the sense of movement but also the ability to make the onlooker reminisce about their own childhood and the experiences they went through in growing up! In looking at this concept I made three prototypes.

In doing this I then went into the workshop on the Thursday and began shaping at cutting out the feet and toes I would use for my final piece. These were made out of a special foam like material that was easily meltable, this being the way in which I cut each of the shapes out.

Visual Communications Continued

My final piece wasted using the black card within the book, wrapped in a thick layer of cardboard to give it more of a finished look. When looking through the book I produced a story line that presets people with a question, this being the reason for the front cover. Overall I’m happy with my book however it needed to have more context within it using the text I produced earlier on in the week!

Overall a good week and loo forward to fine art!

Visual Communications…Graphics!

This was completely new to me but I must say by the end of the week I loved it! Looking upon the works of typography, collage and illustration I became aware of the variety of work that can be produced within this field of work! The aim of the week was to develop the skills in typography, then college and illustration in order to then bring both techniques together to then create a book with a particular meaning or purpose that we wanted to convey.

My book would be about gaining weight, this coming from a recent article published in the Sunday times, talking about the realities of the UK becoming and being the fattest country!!! Not good!!! So in taking this story I would make my book show a clear progression from food to gaining weight to the diseases and damaging aspects it can do your body as well a then asking a question:

“Don’t let your body become a ticking bomb!”

In using this concept for my final piece I then put more thought into the design oft book. In contemplating of all boo designs I finally went with a consatina style using thick black card and then covering the book with cardboard giving it a finished look.

Forming The Orb

20131022-085026.jpg

By the end of the first week I had created my orb, consisting of 2 sheets of clear acrylic plastic and placing them individually into the vacuum forming machine. However rather than sucking all the air out making the plastic shape to a specific mould, you pump air in, therefore forcing the plastic to rise in the shape of a dome! Doing this with both pieces of acrylic then created the spherical shape that I was looking for for my orb.

In creating the sphere I then placed a tube underneath and placed a torch within the tube to then create a direct light source (so less light would spill out). I then photographed it and put my orb into context with the picture above. Showing both where I would have it and what size it would be in day to day life.
Excuse the photoshop skills but I’m pretty happy with the final outcome I feel it would really brighten up any area particular those who need it most!

A glimpse into 3DD…

The beginning of the designing, development and building has begun! I have been inducted into the workshop (stay clear people!) and can begin the process of building my globe/orb, with the intention of bringing communities together again as they once were when neighbours new one another! My orb will glow from within giving a warm comforting feeling to those around it. So far in the making process I have used the vacuum forming machine in order to blow hot air into the plastic causing it to dome upwards, therefore creating one half of a sphere. This is my prototype, therefore making sure that my orb/globe is indeed a possibility, which it is! What a success!! I will now from this point be able to continue onto the real thing, using the clear plastic ready for my light to be shone through! So far so good!!
